SLIP IN PANAMA CANAL

250,000 CUBIC YARDS OF EARTH IN GAILLARD CUT A landslide involving 250,000 cubic yards of material, according to the estimate of J. L. Schley, acting Governor of the Panama Canal Zone, began moving into Gaillard Cut recently, from the east bank near the old East Culebra slide. However, there will be no interruption of shipping through the canal. Two huge dipper dredges were immediately dispatched to the site. One | began digging on the slide on its j arrival and the other was hard at j work next morning. I The landslide pushed beyond the axis of the channel for the length of 100 feet alongside the centre line, reducing the depth of the cut at that point to 38 feet. The channel already has been cleared as far as the ceDtre line, providing 150-foot bottom width at the full forty-foot depth for nave I gation. The break of the slide extends 500 feet along a part of the bank that bad not moved since the completion of the i cut. Dredges can keep it under control without difficulty, and it is estimated by the dredging division that | the channel will be cleared within one month.
