WOT LANGUISHING
CANADIAN DAIRYING INDUSTRY OFFICIAL FIGURES ISSUED (United Service) VANCOUVER. Thursday. Official statistics just issued refute the charge that the Canadian dairying industry ia languishing because of the competition of New Zealand butter and Australian products. The official report shows that the output of dairy factories in 1928 was valued at £28,800,000, this being £1,700,000 over the previous year. There was less butter manufactured by <5.000,0001b, but this is offset by an increase of 5,000,0001 b in cheese. In the last year Canada produced 170,000,0001 b of creamery butter, valued at £13.000,000, practically the same money total as the year before, with prices 1 1-3 cents a lb better than in 1928. Ths average price of butter today is higher than at any time for eight years. The Canadian average price was highest in British Columbia, where New Zealand and Australian competition was naturally keenest. Dr. Ruddick, the Dominion dairy commissioner, says the most outstanding feature this year is the large percentage increase in the production of butter in the Canadian Prairie provinces, compared with two years ago. Their net returns last year equalled the Prices received for sweet cream shipped to the United States. This latter trade may soon be cut off by the high tariff.
