NEVER LET THE HOT RUN COLD
THE QUIET CORNER.
(Written for THE SUN by tile Rev. Charles Chandler, Assistant City MissionerJ TT'-i 7’ more contagious than measles or scarlet fever is enthusiasm. It is the ignition of the soul. It fires men to attempt the so-called unattemptable. and to achieve the apparently impossible. A modicum of this precious quality makes things go off with a bang where otherwise they might sizzle like wet cordite. One man of enthusiasm can set a multitude aflame. Such are the Robespierre’s of life. Enthusiasm is one of youth’s great attractions. It lights up the windows of your soul, and gets everybody thinking your way and doing your will. It has solved more problems and overcome more difficulties than anything else under the sun. It has sent men to the gallows, to the fire, and to the stake with smiles upon their faces and prayers within their hearts. It has done more than anything else in the spiritual realm to gain for man a mastery over sea, and land, and air. It has helped to discover lost islands and to found vast continents. Lt has blazed trails into the very heart of impenetrable forests, and has peopled the far-flung places of the earth with men and women of character and fortitude. The loss of this precious ingredient can mean more than the loss of most else, and the sanest advice a father can offer to his son, as he first sets his foot upon the threshold of life, is:—-“Never let the hot run cold!” Keep warm the genial current of enthusiasm, then success both temporal and eternal will attend you. The tyrant who would laud it over you will become your vassal, and your most formidable foe, upon feeling the warmth of your enthusiasm, will more than likely become your friend., NEXT WEEK: STATICS.
