Masonic Rites at Stratford
LAYING FOUNDATION STONE OF SHAKESPEARE THEATRE Using a mallet which had been the tool o£ an Egyptian workman in a tomb at Sakkara. 4,000 years ago. and a silver trowel made at the Stratford-upon-Avon School of Art, Lord Ampthill, Pro-Grand Master of the United Grand i,odge of England, laid the foundation stone of the new Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Stratford-Ou-Avon. Freemasons from all parts of the country met at the ceremony. The Mayor and Corporation of Stratford, followed by members of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Warwickshire, walked from the Town Hall in procession, and at the site were joined by the governors of the Memorial Theatre, the architect, Miss Elisabeth Scott, and guests. A phial containing newspapers and coin of the realm was placed in a cavity in the lower stone before the upper stone was laid. Vessels containing corn, wine, oil and salt w-ere carried into position and a Masonic ceremony conducted.
