WELL BRED MARE

U RED SMITH, the Middlesex trainer, who recently arrived in Auckland, had his natty Americanbred trotter Linnett the Great on the track at Epsom yesterday doing light exercise. The four-year-old has a nice square style of locomotion and looks a quality sort, which is only to be expected when her pedigree is studied. She is by McGregor the Great, one of the fastest trotting sons of Peter the Great, and her dam, The Linnett, was a daughter of Walnut Hall. Her best performance was put up at Greenford Park on Good Friday, when she won a heat of the Easter mile, trotting at a 2.243, gait. In the final, however, Linnett the Great failed to gain a place.
