“SETTLE SITE FIRST”

MR. H. R. MACKENZIE’S OPINION SHOAL BAY NOT APPROVED “The Harbour Board is definitely opposed to any money being spent upon borings until a site for the bridge is finally decided upon,” said Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, former chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board last evening, referring to the discussion between the Minister of Public Works and the deputation from the Harbour Bridge Association in Wellington yesterday. Mr. Mackenzie * also expressed the opinion that the hoard would not agree to the site which the Minister was told was “principally favoured” —that from the western corner of St. Mary’s Bay reclamation to the centre of Shoal Bay. If the bridge were built on that site, it would interfere with navigation, he said. “The first position up the harbour where this interference would not occur is that from the west portion of the same reclamation to Northcote Point,” said Mr. Mackenzie. That, he considered, was the natural position for the bridge, and was the one that the board favoured He did not think that the board particularly desired representation on the commission. If the commission comprised expert men, the hoard would be satisfied merely to give evidence.
