RANFURLY SHIELD GAMES

NEW ZEALAND UNION MEETS Press Association WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union met this evening, Mr. A. C. Kitto. acting-chair-man, presiding. The Maori Advisory Board wrote requesting that the major unions should be asked to release Maori players if selected to take part in the match Taihauauru, v. Tairawhiti, for the Prin’ce of Wales Cup. to be played on Wednesday, September 11, at Wellington. It was decided to reply that the unions concerned would be recommended to release the players mentioned if possible. The Bay of Plenty Union advised that if a match was arranged at Rotorua between the British team and the Bay of Plenty the latter union was prepared to allow the New Zealand Union the whole of the gate receipts, less cost of assembling the team, advertising and ground charges. The Otago Union wrote formally asking that its match against Wairarapa on September 7 should be regarded as a Ranfurly Shield match. It was decided to inform the Waikato Union that as it owed Wairarapa a visit its match with that union on September 14 could only be regarded as a challenge match for the Ranfurly Shield and not as a special .challenge match. This means that the Waikato Union would have to pay the expenses of its ’team.

PAYNE TROPHY MATCH DRAWN GAME IN SOUTH Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The annual match for the Payne trophy between the champion club teams of Otago and Canterbury was played today. The teams were University A (Dunedin) and Old Boys (Christchurch). The game was played in steady light rain on a greasy ground. Old Boys scored two unconverted tries and a goal from a mark in the first 20 minutes’ play. There was no further score in the first spell, but in the second University, helped by the wind, took control of the game and scored three unconverted tries. The result, therefore, was a draw, each side scoring 9 points. The form of both teams was excellent under the bad conditions, both sets of backs handling the wet ball well. H. Wolland scored two tries and Wright one. Udy kicked a

penalty goal. The local forwards were much superior, but the backs did all the scoring. In the second half Rangitikei had the better of the exchanges. Dawbin scored a try and D. Cameron converted. NORTH AUCKLAND’S WIN (From Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, Wednesday. Nearly 2,000 spectators gathered at Kensington Park this afternoon to witness the match between Hawke's Bay and North Auckland. Hawke’s Bay continued to press until Kerr .relieved with a line kick to halfway. North opened its account when Anderson scored for Kerr to convert. The home side’s second try came when Waterman again got possession to transfer to Nicholls, to Wells, who scored without opposition. Kerr converted. North Auckland 10, Hawke’s Bav 0. The Bay forwards set up a strong attack, but off-side play spoilt many good movements. However, they were not to be denied and from a scramble Campbell forced his way over near the posts. Sitford converted. North Auckland 10, Hawke’s Bay 5.
