NO DISTINCTION

“RICH MAN, POOR MAN, THIEF” MAGISTRATE SPEAKS OUT (From Our Own Correspondent j_ HAMILTON, Wednesday. [ Little . sympathy for sneak thieves is shown by Mr. Wyvern 1 Wilson, S.M., who also believes in making no difference between rich and poor so far as suppressing names is concerned. In the Police Court today Vivian George Ranby, 2oT was admitted to probation on condition that he takes , out a prohibition order, for stealing , a beer glass “handle.” Senior-Sergeant Sweeney said the offence was committed while accused was under the influence of liquor. The magistrate said it was true that the value of the article taken had been trivial, as it was in most cases of j sneak-thieving. There were certain kinds of business where people were , forced to trust their customers, and , traders had very little security over [ their chattels. In such a case as this, where the proprietor was obliged to trust his customers, he could not regard the act as the result of a sudden ! temptation. | The magistrate said that there were i no special circumstances to warrant the suppression of the name. He did 1 not see why the children of respectable parents should be protected any i more than the children of parents who j were not respectable. In cases where there was no sentence the publication of the name was the only protection 1 offered to the public.
