“BUY FROM BRITAIN”

MR. J. H. THOMAS’S APPEAL TO CANADIANS MORE PURCHASED FROM U.S. (Australian and X.Z. Press Association) (United Service) MONTREAL, Tuesday. The British Minister in charge of Unemployment and Lord Privy Seal. Mr. J. H. Thomas, in the course of an interview today, said Canadians might derive considerable satisfaction from the knowledge that they would be making a substantial contribution to the alleviation of the suffering and misery of Britain's unemployed by purchasing a larger proportion of their requirements from that country. “We buy 50 per cent, of your wheat.” said Mr. Thomas, “and it is not given to us either. On the other hand you are buying three times as much from the United States, in raw and manufactured products, as you are purchasing from us. “If the spending power of our peoples were increased it would mean much toward the solution of our greatest problem.” Mr. Thomas said he had conferred with the Dominion Cabinet at Ottawa on the subjects of emigration, the proposed Empire Economic Conference and better trade relations in the Empire. Satisfactory progress had been made.
