400 MILES AN HOUR
GREAT SPEED EXPECTED OF BRITISH PLANE SCHNEIDER CHALLENGER British Official Wireless Reed. 10.43 a.m. RUGBY, Monday. Though the official timing was not disclosed, it was estimated by an expert that a speed of quite 340 miles an hour was at times achieved today by Flying-Officer Atcherley, who flew the Gloster-Napier 4 twice over the Schneider Trophy course from Calshot. The trophy was won for Great Britain in Italy two years ago with a speed of 281.48 miles an hour. Apparently, however, the Gloster-Napier 11. is expected to prove the fastest of the machines which will compete for the trophy. A speed of 400 miles an hour is predicted for this machine. Her trial trip will be made in secret, when the airdrome is closed to everyone not officially connected with the practices for the race,
