MATAMATA

The third fixture between Matamata and Putaruru did not provide many thrills. Matamata won by 14 points to u. Davies (2) and Flutey scored tries and Fausett kicked a penalty goal and converted one try to make up the winner’s tally. The game was a mediocre display, with very few bright patches. The winner will have to show improved form to stand a chance in the Peace Cup match with Hamilton next Saturday. For Matamata Aoake, Stevenson and Syme were good towards. Ake, Vosper and Fausett were prominent backs. Putaruru forwards who showed up were Heke, Hodge, and Dunlop. Paterson was the only visiting back to impress. In the first round of the Clarke Cup, which carries with it the Waikato junior championship, Matamata, on its own ground, was successful against Morrinsville by 10 points to 5. Carroll was the outstanding back. He notched seven points of the winner’s total, his potted goal from the middle of the ruck being an especially fine effort. Sutherland’s try made up the score. Major scored a try and converted it for the losers. The following will represent Matamata in the Peace Cup fixture with Hamilton on Saturday:—Stewart, Kneebone, Vosper, Fausett, Carroll, Egan, Ake, Story, Flutey, Higgins, Simpson, Ensor, Syme, Aoake, and Stevenson; emergencies, Davies, Douglas and Fraser.
