FREE LABOUR TO BE USED
HOKIANGA TO SAIL DISPUTE NOT SETTLED In spite of the fact that the Seamen’s Union and the Ouehunga Waterside Workers’ Union have declared the schooner Hokianga “black,” the owners of the vessel, A. G. Frankham, Limited, still treat the dispute lightly, and announce that, with plenty of nonunion labour available, it is intended to dispatch the Hokianga on schedule time tomorrow. As far as is known, when the Hokianga sails from Onehunga tomorrow, she will be manned by nonunion seamen, owing to the fact that A. G. Frankham, Ltd., is not a party to the mutual agreement between the Shipowners' Federation and the Seamen’s Union. Until the dispute is definitely settled no offer for employment on the schooner will be made by the union. From inquiries made this morning there appear to be no signs of a settlement being reached, while the dispute, if anything, has become further complicated by the Railway Department refusing to employ free labour to unload railway wagons with cargo consigned to the Hokianga. To cope with this, however, A. G. Frankham, Limited, has made arrangements for the transport of cargo to Onehunga by motor-trucks.
