WILTSHIRE AGAIN

EASY WIN OVER KING’S GUARD RED FUCHSIA’S RECORD (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The C.J.C. concluded its Grand National carnival today. There was a strong nor’-west wind blowing and conditions were unpleasant. A big crowd was in attendance and the track was in perfect order. Red Fuchsia registered the astonishing time of 3.37 4-5 for two miles over the battens when he scored from two other outsiders in Elysianor and Perle de Leon in the Sydenham Hurdle. The time has never been done before in New Zealand or Australia. Red Fuchsia was fairly well supported for the Grand National Hurdles on Thursday, but he was never in the firing line in that event. However, the race apparently did him a lot of good, for he showed himself a cut above the rest of the field today. Promising Three-Year-Old Leader put up a brilliant performance when he registered his third win in succession by accounting for a strong field in the Longbeach Handicap. At liis only appearance under silk last season the Chief Ruler colt ran second to Francolin in the Russley Plate at the Canterbury J.C. Easter meeting.

Wiltshire, the Grand National Steeples winner, made his second appearance at the meeting in the Lincoln Steeplechase, and had 10 lengths in lwmd at the end of the race from the Wellington Steeples victor. King’s Guard. The totalisator handled £53 057 against £47,531 10s. For the three days the figures were £158,626 10s compared with £139,835, a substantial increase of £18.791 10s. Longbeach Handicap Leader has scored so impressively at his two previous starts that backers supported him strongly for the Longbeach Handicap, and he wound up a good favourite. The Chief Ruler colt was always in a leading position, and though challenged strongly by Blue Metal and later by Roi de Val he held his place to win by a length and a-half from Roi de Val. Blue Metal was a similar distance away in third place, and then followed Dutch Money.

Leader, who is a fine upstanding three-year-old, is engaged in the New Zealand and G.N. Derby, but though he has shown marked "determination in most of his races it is doubtful whether he will develop on the lines of a Derby colt. Of course, there is no questioning his speed, and later in the spring he may win good races up to a mile. Roi de Val, a son of the imported Lack ham, was slow to begin, but B. H. Morris rode him hard for the first furlong, with the result that he was in a prominent position before the false rail was reached. He issued a strong challenge to Leader over the last 100yds, but made little impression on the Chief Ruler colt. Blue Metal, who ran third, should be improved by the race, but the horse who might have made Leader’s chance much harder but for running wide at the home turn was Dutch Money. She must have lost considerable ground at the straight entrance, and was then flying in fourth place. Leader carried £748 and best backed of the others were Blue Metal £541 and Roi de Val £539. Aylesbury Steeplechase Birkbeck was considered unlucky to lose the Hunt Cup on Thursday,' but after giving a perfect exhibition of fencing he turned the tables on Kaikahu in the Aylesbury Steeplechase. The Birkdale gelding was always racing within striking distance of Kaikahu, and after wresting the lead from the local horse in the straight he came on to win easily by six lengths. Ivaikahu again showed a distinct dislike for the first of the kennels double, but though he did well under his big weight he was well beaten by Birkbeck. Silver Light did best of the others, but she petered out in the last two furlongs. The daughter of Tractor and Silver Patch is only a young mare, and the probabilities are she will develop into a good ’chaser next jumping season. The principal investments were: Bickbeck, £1,260: Kaikahu, £782; and Silver Light, £732. Sydenham Hurdles In winning the Sydenham Hurdles and recording the remarkable time of 3.37 4-5. Red Fuchsia lowered the New Zealand record for two miles. In the Grand National Hurdles on Thursday the All Red gelding*ran a good race, but apparently that outing wrought a big improvement in him. for today ho registered a brilliant performance. Early in the contest Elysianor and Mangani made the pace, but soon after passing the mile post Red Fuchsia was rushed to the front. Racing round the far turn he held a lead o-f two lengths on Elysianor. but at the halfmile he increased his advantage to lengths, and was well clear turning for home. Once over the last hurdle Elysianor issued his final challenge, and though he could not overtake Red Fuchsia he beat the fast finishing Perle de Leon by half a length for second place. Red Fuchsia’s performance was one of his best efforts for some considerable time, and he was going strongly at the end. Elysianor gave a great exhibition of hurdling. He never made the slightest mistake, and though beaten by Red Fuchsia his perform-

ance was most impressive. Perle de Leon ran his best race at ihe meeting, and was doing better at the close than at any other stage. Mangani also put up a great race under his increased weight, and though he narrowly missed a place he was far from disgraced. The disappointment of the race, however, was Aberfeldy. With five furlongs to go he dropped back to last and never improved bis position over the final stages. Mangani wound up a solid favourite with £1,282 invested on his chance, but there was also solid backing for Aberfeldy £ 848 and Lancer £7Bl. Red Fuchsia was backed only to the extent of £2Bl 10s, and be returned his supporters a double-figure dividend. Styx Hurdles Ricearton trainer R. W. King purchased Gala Day this morning from the North Island sportsman, Mr. C. Matthews, and the gelding went close to winning the Styx Hurdles for his new owner. At the half-mile he shot past Aurora Borealis and led into the straight, but once over the last hurdle Aurora Borealis finished with great determination and the mare just got up on the post to win by a short head.

M. Xicol. rider of Aurora Borealis, was under a great disadvantage over the last stages, for he lost an iron early. On his return to scale he

weighed in short and had to claim j the one pound allowance to draw the } correct weight. Gala Day did much better today than on Thursday, when ! he set a terrific pace in front, and i went under only in the last stride. Paris, who is improving with each run, was a good third, and of the others Carinthia made the best showing. Amorist, who was heavily backed, lost whatever chance he possessed when Antrim Boy fell at the hurdle near Cutts’s and interfered with him. Amorist went down on his haunches, | and was pulled up. Alaric fell at the i last obstacle. Lincoln Steeplechase Although Wiltshire’s exhibition of fencing in the Grand National Steeples : was not perfect, the brilliant Waikato ' horse gave an excellent display ot' j quick jumping in the Lincoln Steeples j today. lie was always in a leading | position, but at the kennels double the i last time he jumped to the front, and i going to the second to last obsacle he j was 10 lengths in front of Rangi Sarto j and Dubious, with King’s Guard and | Matu following. Wiltshire led into | the straight, and once over the last i fence he was eased up to win by 10 lengths from King’s Guard, who finished strongly. Fabriano was four lengths away third, and then followed Matu, Dubious and Rangi Sarto.

On his return to the birdcage Wiltshire and his rider, 11. Syrne, were accorded an ovation. He had given a masetrly display of fencing under 11.11, and though he won as he liked his 10 lengths’ advantage from King’s Guard hardly represented his superiority. King’s Guard performed much better than in the Grand National Steeples, and was doing better at the end than at any other stage. Fabriano was a fair third,' but he was being hard ridden a long way from home. Glendowie and Young Thurnham were pulled up with a mile to go. Heathcote Handicap

Following on his previous good form, Black Duke was heavily backed for the Winter Cup. I-Ie failed to run up to expectations in the big Ricearton mile, but he made amends when he won the Heathcote Handicap from Taboo. The Balboa gelding was always in a prominent position, and after allowing Pangolin to lead into the straight he shot to the front at the false rail. Taboo, who had run into a handy position before the home turn was reached, challenged Black Duke over the closing stages, but the latter held his place to win amid much enthusiasm by half a length. Otairi was a length away third, and then followed Black Mint, Vesperus. Town Bank, Full Feather, Malmsey, Solrose, Pangolin and Royal Mint. Usually Taboo fails to reveal his

best on a hard track, but in today’s race he surprised many with his forward running. Black Mint moved short in his preliminary, but after warming Lip to his work he galloped well and was a good fourth. Otairi was always in the fight, and though he finished well he never looked like heading Black Duke. Redcliffs Handicap. Honeycomb again demonstrated his prowess as a galloper when he won the Redcliffs Handicap, carrying the steadier of 11.0. There were many backers who doubted his ability* to best the well-performed Narrative, but in the end the Irish gelding beat the Wingatui mare easily by a length. Glvn Dhu, who was slow away, finished well to gain the minor placing, and of the others The Bailiff did best. Honeycomb was going away from his field at the end, and his victory was so impressive that the probablity is that he will win a big handicap before long. Indeed, he is a handicap horse in the making, and may not be out of his place in a New Zealand Cup field. He is a slow beginner, but is the possessor of a strong finishing run. Selwyn Handicap.

Although Subdivision paid a dividend in the vicinity of half a century when he won the Selwyn Handicap, his victory was not surprising, taking into consideration his track form.. J.-Je' had been working well on the tracks and ran right up to his best form, and defeated Bonogne and Kaiti very decisively at the finish. It is understood that his connections backed him confidently on Thursday, but did not support him today. Both Bonogne and Kaiti ran good races, but Gold Cure lost whatever chance he possessed by being slow to move. The adjourned inquiry in the falling of Young Thurliam in the Enfield Steeples on Thursday was resumed today. After hearing the evidence of D. O’Connor, rider of Fabriano. and L. Hunt, rider of Dubious, and a written statement by E. Shaw (Young Thurliam) the stewards arrived at the conclusion that there was nothing in the evidence to show that any rider was responsible for crossing The accident was caused by Young, Tliurham’s getting on to the heels of a horse in front. A meeting of the Judical Committee was also held to consider a charge against L. J. Ellis for failing to ride Kaiti out in the August Handicap on Thursday. After hearing the evidence of Ellis the stewards fined him £2. Following are the results: Longbeach Handicap, of £250: 6 fur. — 1 Deader, 10.1. W. Pascoe, 1: S Roi de Val, 10.0. B. H.
