Soul Killed: Mother Injured on Same Day
GRIM COINCIDENCE TWO TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS In a distressing accident, Mrs. Mary Brownlee was seriously injured on Saturday evening near the spot where her son, Mr. Ronald Hugh Brownlee, received fatal injuries in the morning. TVTR. BROWNLEE, who was single, 23 years of age, left home on Saturday morning to ride to work. In Dominion Road his machine collided with a motor-truck which was turning into Bellwood Hftrenue. The clothes were nearly torn from the young man, and he was taken to the Auckland Hospital by the St John Ambulance. In the afternoon he died from his injuries. Information of her son’s serious condition had been sent to Mrs. Brownlee, who was at Te Kowhai, near Ngaruawahia. Her husband, who was at Te Aroha, was also informed of the accident. The only member of the family in the city was a younger son. Following her arrival, Mrs. Brownlee hurried to the hospital. It was when she was returning to her son’s residence, 39 Paice Avenue, Dominion Road, shortly after nine o’clock that she was injured. STRUCK BY TAXI Mrs. Brownlee left a tramcar at Grange Road, and was crossing Dominion Road to enter Paice Avenue, when she was knocked down by a taxi driven by Mr. Clarence Williams. Rain was falling at the time and the visibility was poor. Medical examination at her son’s residence showed Mrs. Brownlee to have a fracture of the left leg and head and chest injuries. The head injuries were serious, and Mrs. Brownlee was taken to the hospital. When her husband, Mr. ,J. L. Brownlee, reached the city late on Saturday evening, he learnt of his son’s death and his wife’s accident.
Mr. and Mrs. Brownlee’s second ton, Mr. E. D. Brownlee, was killed about three years ago when he fell over a cliff at Russell.
In spite of a slight improvement, Mrs. Brownlee’s condition was stated from the hospital this morning still to be serious. Mrs. Brownlee’s condition is still very serious, according to a report this afternoon. An inquest on Mr. Brownlee was opened before Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M., coroner, this morning.
