VICTORIAN GOLF TITLE

SLOAN MORPETH BEATS MORRISON ROSS AND HORTON LOSE MELBOURNE, Monday. At the end of the first IS holes of the Victorian amateur golf championship match play today, Ryan (Victoria) was one up on Dr. K. Ross (New Zealand), Sloan Morpeth (New Zealand) was one up on Hector Morrison (Victoria,) and Fawcett (New South Wales) was one up on T. H. Horton (New Zealand). When the second IS holes had been completed this afternoon the results of these games were:—Morpeth defeated Morrison, six up and five to play; Ryan defeated Ross, six up and five to play; Fawcett defeated Horton, one up. The weather conditions were bleat and wintry. Morpeth putted well throughout. Once he sliced into the rough. In getting clear he hit two balls out. One was his own, and the other was a lost ball lying unnoticed alongside it. Horton was unreliable in his short shots. Dr. Ross started badly by losing the first three holes. He made a steady recovery, but could not make up the leeway. At the week-end, Morpeth (74) defeated Reg. Jupp (78), the champion professional, in an 18-hole match.
