ATTEMPT TO OPEN SAFE
BURGLARY AT COUNTRY STORE MUCH WORK FOR NOTHING (From Our Own Correspondent) DARGAVILLE, Monday. An unsuccessful attempt to break open the safe in the Mangawhare store, a branch of the Wairoa Stores, Ltd., was made during the week-end. The safe and premises were locked at 8.30 on Saturday night. Mr. A. H. Neild, the manager, upon opening the premises this morning, discovered that an attempt had been made to prise open the safe door by the insertion of a jemmy or some such instrument, hut the lock failed to open. With the exception of £6, the takings were removed on Saturday. As far as could be ascertained, no goods were taken. All of the doors and windows were secure when the shop was opened this morning, and it is surmised that the intruder must have picked the mechanism and closed the lock on leaving the building.
