“DRUNKEN BRAWL”
ASSAULT CHARGE FOLLOWS POLICE OBTAIN REMAND “It was a drunken brawl and the assaulted man had to go to hospital. On his own statement accused admits the assault, and it is • now a question of how serious it was.” For the reason stated, Sub-Inspector McCarthy applied for a remand when Frederick Van Lume, a fireman aged 43, appeared at the Police Court this morning on a charge of assaulting Lawrence Kirk on Saturday. Van Lume pleaded not guilty, and the sub-inspector added that he understood Kirk to have come out of hospital yesterday. Van Lume was remanded until tomorrow, having admitted that he was in arrears in respect of a maintenance order for 25s a week for the support of his wife and two children. Mr. W. J. Campbell, maintenance officer, said that Van Lume’s wife and children were receiving charitable aid. "He told me yesterday that he was not allowed to work on the wharves for a few months, and that he had been in the North looking for work,” added Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.
