SCOW HERALD FOUND
CAUGHT IN TRAWL NET GEAR IDENTIFIES WRECK According to the master of the trawler Thomas Currell, the scow Herald, which went ashore on Canoe Rock in July of last year, has been located in deep water eleven miles east of Canoe Rock. The trawler was trawling last Friday between Canoe Rock and Channel Island when her trawl became enmeshed in a wreck. Bringing the wreck near the surface, the weight became too great and slid back under water,. However, the main gaff with various blocks and tackles were hauled to the surface and with these the identity of the wreck was known. The Herald was wrecked while bound from Whangarei to Coromandel with a cargo of coal. She struck Canoe Rock just before dawn on July 14, through missing stays when passing to windward of the rock. The crew scrambled ashorer and soon after the wreck drifted away in an easterly direction. TTio Tofua, which left Auckland the same day for Suva, picked the crew up and broughth them back to Rangitoto beacon, where they were transferred to a launch and landed in town. Captain T. Atwood, superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Auckland has received an official report from the master of the Thomas Currell, who hsa given the following bearings for the present location of the wreck: Watchman Island east by north, halfnorth (Mag.); Tiri, south-west by south (Mag.); Moko Hinau Light, just clear of the eastern edge of Little Barrier. Depth 2f> to -7 fathoms.
