BUILDING FOR NATIONHOOD
THE NEEDS OF OUR COUNTRY Visitors have frequently remarked that New Zealand seems moro British than Britain does and is easily the most loyal member of the Empire. We take a pride in being one of that great Federation of Nations, but as a self-governing unit New Zealand must carve out its own destiny as a nation. That cannot be achieved while we aro content to remain scattered producers of foodstuffs and raw materials. Full nationhood can only be attained by complete industrial development and the fullest self-reli-ance on our own resources. It has been noted that less than one-half of our "breadwinners” are engaged in the actual production of wealth, and these producers are almost equally divided between the primary and manufacturing industries. Our national prosperity depends on both branches of production being developed to the greatest extent possible, with our own industrial plants manufacturing our raw materials into finished goods, so that we may meet our wants by our own industry and enterprise, and build a better and brighter Britain in the Pacific where enforced unemployment with its ghastly trail of poverty and misery will be> unknown.
