WHITE NEW ZEALAND

LEAGUE’S FAITH IN GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE PROBABLE (From Our Oirn Correspondent) PUKEKOHE. tf'riday. 1 • I am satisfied that the Government j is going: to do something to assist us, ) especially in regard to social affairs.” This remark was made by Mr. G. T. Parvin. secretary of the White N"ew j Zealand League, at a meeting last j evening. Mr. M. Cronin presided. T’he secretary reparted that he had met Te Akarana Maori Association, and discussed the cohabiting of Maori girls with Asiatics. The association had adopted a firm attitude, and was determined to conserve the purity of the native race. The difficulty appeared to be that there were no habitations ava-ilable for native girls em- * ployed by Chinese and Hindus. Continuing, he related having interviewed the Ministers of Xative Affairs, Labour, and Customs, when in Wellington last week, and had received their assurance that particulars regard- j ing employment and social conditions would be obtained to place before Cabi- \ net. It was agreed to support Te Aka- j rana Association in its representations | to prevent social contamination. The league also decided to suggest j to the Pukekohe Borough Council that a by-law be former stipulating that no residences of a less value than £3OO bo erected on land temporarily occupied bv Asiatics. The borough council and the Franklin County Council are to be asked to furnish the number of Asiatics in their areas. A resolution was carried asking the inspector of police to recommend to the Government that photographs of the holder be attached to passports of all Asiatics. The establishment of a branch at Otahuhu was discussed, the president, the secretary, and Mr. O. Heerdegen being asked to arrange a meeting in that centre.
