FEATHER CUSHIONS AND PILLOWS
When cushion or pillow covers are wearing thin, so that the feathers work through, rub them well on the inside with a piece of hard soap. This will prevent the filling from working out. To render feather pillows cool and refreshing, crush a small block of camphor and sprinkle it among the feathers. Twopennyworth of camphor will be sufficient for four pillows, and one application will be effective for about three months. After feather cushions have been in use for four or five years, it is advisable to re dress the feathers to keep them sweet and preserve their softness. As they are removed from the ticks, all clotted lumps should be
broken, and the whole shaken in a fine wire sieve, so that dust and other impurities are sifted out. Place the ! feathers in a muslin bag and gently beat them with a carpet stick before returning them to the ticks. If it is desirable to wash feathers, make a strong soap lather in a bath, add a little ammonia, and, having • emptied the feathers into an old pillow ] case, press them well down in the i water. Leave for half an hour or so, pressing from time to time. After I rinsing in several changes of water, hang the bag out of doors lor several ! days, shaking it occasionally so that | the feathers are fluffed out, after | which they will be as sweet and fresh ! as ever.
