SMALL BOOKMAKER FINED £lO HONESTY PROVED Charged early in the week with publishing a double chart, Percy McCarthy was remanded for sentence in order that investigation might be made into an allegation that the man had refused to pay out when one of his “clients” had been successful in a £lO double. This morning Chief-Detective Hammond said that the man who had complained to the police about having won the double was mistaken, and that he was really not entitled to any winnings. There was no suggestion now that the man had defaulted. “He is just a small bettor with an £8 double,” concluded the chief-detective. “I just wanted to find out that he was not a ‘scaler,’ as you call them,” said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., who had suggested the remand. Mr. Sullivan thanked the chiefdetective for his statement. “My client has suffered humiliation over the suggestions that have been made/ said counsel. The Magistrate: Look at the advertisement he has received. Air. Sullivan: It is a very bad advertisement, and 1 am glad that it has been retracted. A fine of £lO was imposed and McCarthy was given a week in which to find the money.
