JO WITT RETAINS SEAT
LIBERAL DESERTER STANDS FOR LABOUR PRESTON BY-ELECTION (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) LONDON, Wednesday. A. by-election was held today at Preston to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation ot Sir William A. Jowitt, Attorney-General. At the recent general election Sir William was elected tor one of the two Preston seats as a Liberal. He resigned in order to recontest the seat as a Labour candidate. The result of the polling was: Sir William A. Jowitt (Lab.) 35,608 A. B. Howitt (Conservative) 29,168 S. M. Holden (Independent) 410 The result of the polling at the general election for the two Preston seats was as follows: T. Shaw (Labour) 37,705* W. A. Jowitt (Liberal) .. . 31,277* A. B. Howitt (Con.) .. .. 29,116 C. E. G. Emott (Con.) .. .. 27,754 S. M. Holden (Independent) 2,111 ‘Elected.
