Mr. A. B. Card, postmaster at Taumarunui, supplies the following statistics for the district for July: Births, .13; deaths, 7; marriages, 4. Despite the depression in the timber trade, new mills continue to materialise in varioLis parts of the King Country. Messrs. Watkins Bros., of Kakahi, are having a new and thoroughly up-to-date establishment erected at Owhango, at which it is expected cutting will commence about the end of tlie year. * * -1: A meeting of citizens interested in the “No More War” movement was held at Taumarunui, when tlie organiser, Mr. C. IT. Cole, with Dominion status, gave an address explaining the objects of the movement. They were, ho said, solidly represented in 30 different countries. The meeting decided to make arrangements for Mr.. R. Semple to visit Taumarunui and give liis lantern-illustrated address against war. Mr. J. Pattison presided and at the close of the meeting it was resolved to organise a working branch in the district. Mr. Cole was accorded a vote of thanks. At the last meeting of the Wanganui River Trust Mr. F. H. Allen brought forward a motion covering suggested freight reductions on fertilisers on the river, with the object of bringing these more into line with the railways. Mr. Allen explained that on the rail a charge of 3s Id a ton on six ton lots was made for 20 miles, whereas on the river tlie freight for 22 miles worked out at 28s. The trust negatived the motion on the ground that the matter was out of its scope, possibly being one for the Farmers’ Union.
