ONE-HORSE RACE

FABRIANO’S EASY VICTORY AT WASHDYKE S.C. HUNT CLUB’S ANNUAL (Special to THE SUN) TIMARTJ, Saturday. The South Canterbury Hunt Club held its annual meeting at Washdyke today under very unfavourable conditions. The weather was fine, but after the recent floods the track was in a very heavy state and fast times were out of the question. The totalisator handled £9,587, against £12,213 10s last year. The Hurdles Zeuxis carried on £5 in the Pukaki Hurdles at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on Thursday, but today backers fell over themselves to back him, and at the close of operations he was paying under even money to win. He certainly improved upon his running at his last start, but ho was beaten two furlongs from home and had to be content with a minor placing. Gala Day, as usual, was sent to the front and he led down the back from Goldtown, Carinthia, Blue Peter Zeuxis and Apache. Gala Day was still the leader at the far turn, but racing across the top Carinthia made a

forward move and was just in behind Gala Day when the straight was entered. Gala Day led Carinthia over tho last hurdle, but on the flat Carinthia outpaced Gala Day and won decisively by two lengths. Zeuxis was three lengths away, third, and then came Paris, Apache. Goldtown and Blue Peter. Carinthia, who appreciated the heavy state of the track, was always going like a winner over the concluding stages, and the easy manner in which ho disposed of Gala Day indicates that ho is back to his best form again. Zeuxis was not seen at his best in the heavy track, but he may make amends at an early date. Pareora Steeples Silver Light was thought to be the best of good things for the Pareora Hunters’ Steeplechase, but under her heavy impost she failed to stay the distance and was beaten half a mile from home. Passing the stand double the outsider. Diamond Jack, led Silver Light and Valves. and in this order they raced till half a mile from home, where Diamond Jack began to draw away. Diamond Jack led into the straight, and though challenged strongly by Valves he held his position to win by two and a-half lengths. Silver Light was 10 lengths further away, third. Te Haunui fell down the back the last time and both Ma Rosa and Sea Boy ran off early in the piece Canterbury Steeplechase Fabriano was unlucky when he fell in the Wai-iti Steeples on Thursday, but he made amends for that defeat when he scored a very easy win in the South Canterbury Steeplechase today. lie led throughout and was eased up to win without opposition. Ifandy was a long way behind Fabriano when he fell at the second to last fence, but later ho was remounted by his trainer. B. P. Brooker, to gain second place. Taramoa lost his rider at the first fence. After baulking at the fence at the top of the straight, the first of the stand double, and the second of the stand double. Oriflamh eventually dislodged his rider. C. McGovern, rider of Handy, received a badly broken arm when that horse fell, and he was taken to hospital. Levels Hack Broadfield was a firm fancy for th? Levels Hack Handicap, but he was beaten very easily at the finish by Ell Boa. Mount Boa looked certain get second place 25 yards from the

post, but he stopped over the closing stages and Broadfield beat him by a j neck. Ell Mido was next. Washdyke Trot Harry Locanda was best backed in the Washdyke Trot, but the favourite never looked a winner at any stage and finished well back. Studefit Prince, who was ridden by J. Bryce, junr., took up the role of pacemaker from the start, and after leading into the straight eventually defeated Otaio Rose by three lengths. Golden Vale was 10 lengths away third, and then came Kid Logan. Teschemaker Hunt Cup The withdrawal of Silver Light, Hyperion, Tehaunui and Sea Boy from the Teschemaker Memorial Hunt Cup left only Night Raid, Mataipuke and Valves to face the starter. Mataipuke wound up favourite, but at a surprisingly good price. The race needs little description, for Mataipuke went to the front from the outset and had no difficulty in beating Night Raid by eight lengths. Valves fell three fences from home but was remounted to gain third place. Hunters* Plate Hidden Mystery wound up favourite for the Hunters’ Plate Handicap, being slightly better backed than Beauty Light. Royal Land went away with a big lead early, but down the back the field began to bunch and Shuteye took charge before the far turn was reached. Shuteye and Exide led into the straight, but at the distance post Exide drew away. Scion and Whiffler came from the back over the last furlong, but Exide won easily at the finish by two lengths from Whiffler, who beat Scion by a neck for second place. Clarenson was fourth, followed by Fresh Breeze and Krasnoi. Claremont Handicap The Claremont Handicap was a good betting race, but Taboo wound up a good favourite. Pangolin went to the front soon after the field settled down and he led to the far turn from Rascal, Membo, Wingatui, Taboo and Evening. Rascal' headed Pangolin three furlongs from home and he led into the straight from Membo, Evening and Taboo. Rascal and Membo fought out a stirring finish over the last furlong, but Rascal finislid best itnd beat Membo by a neck. Taboo was three lengths a\vay. and then came Evening, Town Bank and Waterlow.
