JOCKEY KILLED

ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S BEST H. CAIRNS’S TRAGIC FATE (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) MELBOURNE, Sunday. 11. Cairns, one of the best-known jockeys in Australia and New Zealand, was fatally injured yesterday. His mount, Quick Deal, fell at the last fence in the Gellibrand Hurdle Race at Mooney Valley, and turned a somersault. The animal’s hindquarters crashed on to the rider, whose skull was fractured. Under the heading “A Versatile Rider,” the “Australasian” of a recent date had the following:—“A number of riders has come from New Zealand at one time and another, and settled down in Melbourne, but none with more success than H. Cairns. He came to Victoria in 1910 on the advice of D. J. Price. Cairns first made a name for himself in Australia as a rider in hurdle races-. In 1914 he steered Clontaft to victory in the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdle Race, and three years after he had the mount on Merunqua when that gelding won the same race. “Cairns steered the winner of many important flat races, Heroic (Australian Jockey Club’s Derby and Caulfield Guineas), Spearfelt (Melbourne Cup and Australian Cup) being included among the horses that scored in his hands. Cairns was regarded as one of the most brilliant and courageous jockeys, and his services were always in large request.” It was after going to Australia that Cairns developed into one of the leading horsemen on the other side. Before leaving New Zealand, Cairns had ridden for a few seasons with moderate success. He won the Wanganui Steeplechase in 1909 on Mocassin; the Wairarapa Cup in 1907 on Riflemaid; and the Marlborough Cup in 1907 and 1909 on Aeolus and Maiora respectively.
