KING’S CUP
VALPARAISO MAY GO ONE BETTER NOT A STRONG FIELD A fair idea of the difference in the class of horse which will contest this year’s King’s Cup from those that ran at Randwick 18 months ago can be gleaned from the weight allotted Valparaiso. When he ran second to Limerick at Randwick, Valparaiso carried 7.5, remarks a Sydney writer. In Brisbane next month the gelding will carry an additional 151 b. Yet Valparaiso has actually done nothing to support the idea that he is a better horse now. He has not won a race for some time, and at his last two efforts was beaten at the end as though he lacked real stamina. Considering that his connections have long coveted the King’s Cup, it is hardly likely that Valparaiso was right at his top at either start, however, and with all his 8.6 he is not out of the race. No Handicap Horse Old Bacchus, top-weight with the maximum, 9.5, is another indication that connections of class horses have not been attracted either by the prize or the sentimental side of winning a King’s Cup. Bacchus has never been a handicap horse, and it is problematical whether his owner will tackle the race. The fact of Bacchus having run once or twice recently, however, supports the contention that he might go to Brisbane. Handicappers continue to take no risks with the ex-New Zealander, Satrap. Since he was, bought at a high figure some time back, he has proved a failure, and if he does not improve on past efforts, he will find 8.10 above him. Her Mission Oratrix was brought from New Zealand early so that she would haye plenty of time for preparation for the King’s Cup. Considering her fine second to Jocelyn in the last Metropolitan, Oratrix must have a chance in the weakened King’s Cup field with 8.8. Winalot could not win the last King’s Cup for Mr. E. K. White. This yeg.r that owner is reported to have hopes of Leadlight succeeding. It will require a great improvement for Leadlight to win such a race, but many good Sydney judges are prepared for a far better horse this spring. He is not lightly treated with 8.4, however.
