DESERTED HIS SHIP
SEAMAN PAYS EXPENSES Now a farm-hand, but at one time a seaman on the Piako, Donald McLeod pleaded guilty at the Police Court this morning on a charge of deserting his ship at Wellington on May 31. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said that the vessel had now left New Zealand waters. The shipping company’s expenses amounted to £2 10s and there was 7s cab hire to be paid. “We can’t pass over desertion as if it were nothing,” remarked Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., ordering McLeod to pav the expenses. McLeod asked for time to pay, saying that he was working on the farm of a Mr. Webster at Kaukapakapa. The Sub-Inspector: But you are only working for your food there. McLeod: That is only during the first week. I start earning wages next week. Time to pay was refused. “Your friends can find the money,” remarked the magistrate.
