Miner Killed by Sudden Fall of Coal
SECOND MAN INJURED FATALITY AT ROTOWARO (From Our Own Correspondent) HUNTLT, Today. A fatal accident occurred at the Taupiri Coal Company’s mine at Rotowaro at about nine o’clock last evening, when Samuel Broadbent, aged 50, a miner, lost his life in a fall of coal. Mr. Broadbent was engaged with a mate, Joseph O’Brien, in the hazardous task of extracting pillar coal, when without warning a fall took place, and he was buried under a mass of coal. Mr. O’Brien was caught by the fall, but was extricated by a trucker, H. Henderson, suffering from an abrasion on one leg and severe shock. Mr. Henderson gave the alarm, and Dr. R. C. Mac Diarmid was on hand
immediately. Willing hands worked frantically to recover Broadbent’s body, but the weight on his chest caused asphyxiation, and he was dead when extricated from the debris. Mr. Broadbent, who was a returned soldier, leaves a widow.
