WANTON DAMAGE
RAILWAY SEATS SLASHED WORK OF HOOLIGANS An instance of deliberate vandalism is reported by tbe railway department. The covering of several seats on one of the suburban trains has been slashed and cut by some sharp instrument, evidently a razor. When a morning train reached Auckland on Saturday from Papakura it was found that the seats in a firstclass compartment had been ruined by being cut and slashed to pieces. Several of the cars on the suburban trains were made at the old Newmarket shops specially for the suburban traffic. They are wider than the ordinary railway cars and in order to make travel more comfortable for the city workers the seats were covered in moquette. This wanton destruction could have been done only by hooligans. The case has been reported to the police, who are making inquiries.
