TOBACCO DESTROYED

FIRE IN BIG WAREHOUSE FIREMEN’S DIFFICULTIES Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Today. Damage estimated at £4,000 was done by fire last evening in the packing room of Bing Harris Company's warehouse, Lichfield Street, Christchurch. A big stock of tobacco which had been prepared for delivery was destroyed. Other stock was damaged by smoke. Losses are covered by insurances with the Sun Company. The fire was first noticed by a constable who was passing at 10.35 p.m. He smelt smoke and, going to investigate, saw flames through the back windows. The firemen had considerable difficulty in getting in as all windows at the back are barred. They had,- in the end, to break through a big double door. The fire was very fierce, and St was with considerable difficulty, after an hour’s hard fighting, that the brigade got It under control. It is not known how it originated.
