VIEWS OF WELL-KNOWN DESIGNER Motion picture “Rets." reproducing with remarkable accuracy not only th*physical details, but the atmosphei e of Singapore, were constructed r* - cently for the Paramount all-talking picture, “The Letter.” The “atmosphere” is an important thing, according to William SSaulter, the artist who designed the set-. “There is accuracy, of course.” sa d Saulter. “which is the result of a great deal of research, photographs of certain scenes in Singapore having been, taken especially for the guidance of the artists but the aim was not «* much to follow the accuracy of detail as to catch the spirit of the place. The set designer has to work more with his heart than with his. head, and is indeed a true artist. He must read, books and descriptions of the place he representing, and he must ste* i» himself in the atmosphere of the locale in order that his impressions may be expressed in the set he is building The Letter” is the first Paramount all-dialogue picture starring the wellknown Broadway actress, Jeanne Eagles.
