FAVOURITES ROUTED

TRENTHAM RACING CARNIVAL ENDS MAUNGA AND OTAIRI PAY BIG PRICES (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Saturday. RAIN ceased after 9 o’clock on Saturday morning and looked like holding oft; for the final day of the Wellington meeting, but after the second race steady rain set in and throughout the afternoon it continued unceasingly. The lawns were nothing more than lakelets, and the course itself was a quagmire by the time the Winter Hurdles heat was staged.

The finish of that race was by no means satisfactory. Maunga showed a return to winning form in the July Steeplechase, being little fancied, and there was another surprise in store when Otairi led practically all the way in the Winter Oats. The totalisator handled £57,521. against £68.978, making for the three days £144,291, compared with £157,380 for last winter carnival, a decrease of £ 13,059. Horomea Again Form worked out very well in the opening event, with Horomea returning a surprising dividend, in view of her first and second previously at the meeting. Amorist £1,075, and Thurnbell £1,033, carried big money, with TToromea fourth choice carrying £sll. Horomea, Calluna and Master Doon were in charge over the second fence, and going out of the straight were attended by Inferno, Grand National, Amorist, Tliurnbell and*Waltzer. Along the back Inftrno, Horomea and Amorist were together, until a faulty jump saw Inferno drop back, with Grand National, Master Doon, Modern, Lady Gay and Thurnbell following. Horomea aud Amorist were still together at the home turn from Thurnbell, Glena Bay, Modern and Lady Gay. The first pair took the last hurdle together, but Horomea stuck on best and won by three lengths, Amorist being two lengths in front of Thurnbell. Next came Lady Gay, Modern, Glena Bay, Grand National. Waltzer and Inferno. This time Horomea was ridden in front, and this appeared to suit her nicely. Amorist’s rise of a stone stopped him, but he is a real good sort. Both Horomea and Amorist fenced excellently, and this enabled them to outclass the remainder. Thurnbell was in trouble from other horses at some of his fences, and should do better with a bit more experience. Lady Gay finished on well. Glena Bay was nearly down at the second fence, and then rushed up quickly at the half-mile, being handy at the home turn, where he stopped. Waltzer was never prominent, and Grand National did best of the remainder. Last Mark Gets Heme Last Mark won the Novice Handicap handsomely. Juggle £1,654 and Roundelay £l,lBO were the favourites, with the winner fourth choice with £917. Kali, Juggle, Air Laddie, Roundelay and Last Mark were early prominent, with Justify also in the leading bunch. As they swung on to the course proper, below the false rail, Last Mark hit the front from Air Laddie and Roundelay, and then Last Mark came on to win comfortably by a length and a-half, with Roundelay a neck in front of the big outsider, Air Laddie, who weakened over the final 50 yards. Arrow Zone, who was also handy to the leaders at the bottom of the straight, was fourth, and next were Shot Silk. Juggle and Justify. The winner is a useful sort of three-yea.r-old by King Mark from Hoy, and full-brother to that good horse Anomaly. He should win good races next season. King’s Jest is also a brother to Last Mark. Roundelay is a two-year-old by Limond from Tivoli, and is an attractive style of galloper, with size and quality. Air Laddie went well, and Arrowzone did best of the others. Juggle and Justify stopped badly. Havering’s Good Price Havering led all the way with an apprentice rider aboard, and just lasted long enough to win. Maori Boy, £1,339, was favourite, while the winner with £650 was at a fine price. When they were let go Havering at once went to the front from Austerity, Otauru Lass, Brilliant Light, Shortly, and Lucre, and then the leader began to draw away, increasing his lead across the top, until he was ten lengths oLit. At the home turn the nearest to him were Fine Acre, Brilliant Light, Austeriay and Lucre. Although he stopped badly near the post, Havering held on to win by five lengths from Maori Boy, with a neck back to Otauru Lass and Royal Black. Then came Mandarine, Fine Acre, Austerity and Shortly. Backers were caught napping by the winner, who was ridden by Pascoe, who claimed full allowance. He

won easily. Maori Boy was ridden much more judiciously than hitherto, and was a good second. Otaura Lass and Royal Black went good races, but some of the others did not appear too keen, when Havering had such a commanding lead at the false rail. Overhaul Prevails Again Mister Gamp £2,354 was a hot first fancy for the Winter Hurdles, the best supported of the others being King's Guard £1,013, and Overhaul £1,009. Prince Lu was clear over the first fence from Red Fuchsia. Comical. Locarno and Overhaul, but passing the stands for the first time there was little between Prince Lu. Comical. Aberfeldy, Locarno, Overhaul, Red Fuchsia. Troilus, Nukumai, Home Made and Mister Gamp, there not being a great deal between the field at this point. Along the back Prince Lu had retired, and he later pulled up, Overhaul and Comical going along ahead of Locarno, Red Fuchsia, Mister Gamp, King's Guard, Home Made and Aberfeldy. Comical was clear as they started to file across the top and he turned for home slightly in front of Overhaul, with Mister Gamp right up and Locarno next, followed at intervals by King’s Guard and Red Fuchsia. The favourite and leader the last hurdle together, and then Overhaul

on the outside of Mister Gamp, crossed tp the rails, and the favourite had to pull out and come round. Overhaul held on to this advantage and won by a length and a-half, with Comical half a dozen lengths away, and King’s Guard a fair fourth. Next at intervals were Locarno, Red Fuchsia, Home Made and Aberfeldy. An inquiry was held into the crossing incident, but the judge’s placings were not disturbed. Jockey Suspended A. Hobson, rider of Overhaul in the Winter Hurdles, was suspended for five weeks for crossing first Comical, and then Mister Gamp. This suspension means that Hobson, who has been riding extremely well, will have to miss the Grand National meeting. A Big Dividend There was a turn up in the Winter Oats, Reed riding Otairi at long odds, the winner paying nearly a pcore. Merry Mint, £1,768, was favourite at cramped odds, with the winner carrying but £291, and Gold Cure, second horse, £550. Tanagra was left at the start. Town Bank leading from a bunch comprising Gold Cure, Otairi, High Pitch, Merry Mint, Fairy Herald and Ohinemuri, with Ruanui and Kawliakina tailing the field. At the end of a couple of furlongs Otairi was out in the van from Merry Mint, High Pitch, Taneriri, Last Crust, Black Mint and Ohinemuri, and crossing the top Otairi was just in front of Merry Mint, this pair showing the way to the straight from High Pitch, Fairy Herald, Black Mint, Last Crust, Gold Cure and Taneriri all in a bunch. Otairi was always doing it well in front, and in the run to the judge won by two lengths from Gold Cure. Full Feather finished well, half a length away, and Merry Mint was fourth. Next in order came Fairy Herald, Town Bank, High Pitch, King's Jest, Taneriri and Ruanui. The surprising part about Otairi’s success was the price paid, for he went well previously. He is very well just now, but it is rather rapid promotion from a Carbine Plate at Ellerslie to Winter Oats at Trentham. Gold Cure was all the better for his outing on the opening day, and Full Feather came with a fine finishing burst. Merry Mint was going very easily at the home turn, but he was floundering in the mud, and weakened. Fairy Herald and High Pitch had every show, and so, too, did Town Bank. Weight beat High Pitch and King’s Jest met with trouble in the middle stages. Tanereri was in a fair position at the home turn, but failed to go on. Another Surprise Maunga showed a surprise return to form in the July Steeplechase and paid over a quarter of a century for his win. Fabriano, £1,347, was favourite, while Maunga, eleventh favourite in a twelve-horse field, carrying only £193, while Matu, fifth favourite, was entrusted witli £569. Brigadier Bill led over the initial fences, and over the stand double was attended by Boomerday, Radiate, Glendowie. Royal Elm, Fabriano and Alaric. With a round covered, the favourite lost his rider, aird bad jumping caused Brigadier Bill to lose ground. Radiate was in front over the double the second time, Boomerday, Royal Elm, Alaric, Glendowie and Brigadier Bill following, Maunga being last, but moving up, six furlongs from home. Radiate led across the top and into the straight from Alaric, Maunga and Matu. and at the false rail Maunga passed the others and won by three lengths from Matu, Alaric being a similar distance away. Radiate was fourth and Royal Elm, Rangi Sarto, Young Thurnham and Kawini were next to cross the line . a Jumping like a stag, Maunga had considerable ground to make up in the last round, and he stayed on much better than the leaders. Apparently he found the conditions to his liking. Matu finished well and headed the tired Alaric for second money. Radiate was going like a winner until he rapped one hard along the back the second time. Boomerday also went nicely until the last quarter-mile, when he faded. Pie does not stay too well just yet. Fabriano was going fairly well when he unshipped his . rider. Marble King Wins Well Marble King was at a wonderful price, and he finally won the sprint easily. Taboo, £1,364, was favourite, and Marble King carried £ 658, being only sixth choice. A good start saw Oration lead out first from Sudden Storm, and Marble King on the outside of Billikins and Kaiti. Oration ran wide coming on to the course proper, and Marble King was up with him, Billikins and Kaiti being handy. Marble King from this out made no race of it, clearing out from his opponents to win easily, easing up, by three lengths. There was a great tussle for the minor places, Taboo, Kaiti, Billikins and Tcheka passing the post locked together, and they were placed in that order, heads separating them. Royal Game headed the remainder. The Final Flutter Several horses were fancied and confidently backed for the concluding race, the Kia Ora Handicap, and Ko* taki Eka £1.386 wound up £153 better favourite than Mark Mint. The ultimate dividend payers were respectively fifth and sixth favourites, with £ 860 and £ 603 on their chances. Little could be seen through the rain and smoke of the field as they swept on to the course proper, but Lucky Bag was in front, with Taranto and Kotaki Eka handy, and Mark Mint further back. Lucky Bag was still well clear at the distance, and hanging on well gave R. Reed his fourth winner at the meeting, scoring by three lengths from Taranto, with Kotaki Eka close up third. Uopwood, Mangaliarei and Mark Mint were right up to the placed horses, with Loving Cup following. The winner who at one stage of a sixfurlong race on the second day had something like a 10 lengths’ break on the field, stayed on well in the mud. Taranto was always a possibility, and the forward showing of the favourite was evidently expected. Hopwood and Mark Mint would have done better with another furlong to go.
