MORE ELECTRICITY USED
STEADY INCREASE SHOWN WAITEMATA POWER BOARD There has been a large increase in the sale of electric power by the Waitemata Electric-Power Board during the last quarter, according to financial returns made at the meeting of the board this morning. The total sales for the quarter ended June 30 last amounted to £18.403 7s lid, as against £15,159 9s 4d for the corresponding period last year—an increase of £3,243 18s 7d. Discounts to consumers for the quarter totalled £2.043. The gross sales of current for the month of June amounted to £8,919 1.6 s 2d, compared with £7,157 18s 7d for June 1928—an increase of £1,761 17s 7d. The loan account showed a credit balance available for capital expenditure of £12,378. This sum would probably be expended by the end of November. There was. however, a small deficit of £39 5s 5d in the trading account for the quarter ended June 30. The report stated that this had been caused by the board having to comply with recent legislation and the fact that the particular three months were the worst three months in the year from a trading point of view. The secretary-treasurer, Mr. A. Main, reported that tenders for the alterations and additions to the existing building would be submitted for opening by the board on June 29. BRANCH AT DEVONPORT The. resident engineer to the board, Mr. F. J. H. Wilson, reported that the total number of new consumers registered during the quarter was 230. An extension of half a mile had been made along Portage Road, New Lynn, to supply residents adjacent to the borough boundary. The reticulation in the Bayswater and Belmont districts had been inspected during the pa.st month and the necessary maintenance work carried out. A letter from Devonport Mutual Stores requested the supply of domestic power up till 4 p.m.. as the store was a long narrow place and it was quite necessary to have the lights burning all day. The question was referred to the engineer to report to the General Purposes Committee. The General Purposes Committee recommended that the board accept the offer of the lease of a shop in Devonport for a term of three years as a showroom and a cash receiving depot. The board adopted the recommendation. The committee also recommended that the extension to Riverhead be authorised, subject to the necessary guarantees being approved by the secretary. This was agreed to. The following letter was received from Messrs. Willett, Radford, Davies and Coster, soldier-settlers, Motutara: “We wish to cancel our application tive properties. The milking season is for supply of electricity to our respecstarting in a few days, and we are obliged to make other arrangements. We hope some future time to be connected with your power line, but meantime please cancel our applications.” The board decided to receive the letter with regret, and reply that it was still anxious to supply the soldiers with power next season, if possible.
