Winter Exhibition Will Finish Tonight
FULL PROGRAMMES TODAY RESULTS OF BABY CONTEST At ten o’clock this evening the Auckland Winter Exhibition will conclude. So far it has proved a most successful season ar-d with a full programme arranged for today a successful climax is anticipated. Given a reasonably fine evening the huge buildings where the displays are housed should be crowded. One of the principal events last evening was the announcement of the final result of the baby contest. Baby Grogan, with 1,325 points, was first; Baby Mildon, 1,237 points, second; Baby O’Sullivan, 1,016 points, third; and Baby Dickman, 961 points, fourth. The parents of the first three babies were required to take them to the exhibition at 2.30 this afternoon for the presentation of prizes. The keen interest taken by the public in the contest is indicated in the heavy voting for the various candidates. There was also a large attendance last evening when the results were announced, and they were greeted with hearty applause. The Auckland Kennel Club’s show was also a popular attraction. Yesterday terriers and toy dogs were judged and the awards were watched with interest. The dogs make a fine showing and the pens proved a big attraction to a large section of the public. Yesterday’s gate takings amounted to £325, compared with £347 on the corresponding day of last year. The receipts for the season to date arcstill above those of last year, £3,197 having been taken, compared with £3,193 last year. These figures, however, do not include the large number of school children that have passed through the gates during the present season. Yesterday 1,711 children, accompanied by 60 teachers, visited the exhibition and were admitted free. Free picture programmes in the afternoon and evening proved a popular attraction, and additional entertainment was provided by the pupils from St. Stephen’s Maori School, who under the direction of the headmaster, Mr. W. C. Morris, gave a number of traditional Maori songs and hakas. A very fine display of military drill, physical drill, gymnastics and tumbling was also given under the direction of the school instructor, Mr. P. Smyth. This afternoon and evening full programmes of Highland dancing will be given under the auspices of the Auckland Highland Dancing Society. The programmes cover a wide of items and should add considerably to I the variety of attractions offering at the big provincial display.
