Applause Returns To Cinema Shows
\ PPLAUSE is coming back to motion picture theatres. Years ago when film fare was less familiar, people clapped hands, sighed, exclaimed and even stamped. They found it difficult to break the habit formed in legitimate theatres. Six months ago, however, Aucklanders had become sophisticated and comparatively silent onlookers. They laughed, but laughter is involuntary. Today a different tale is told. Talkies lend to the screen an air of reality that compels more definite appreciation. Applause is becoming the rule, and smart sections of dialogue produce instant and audible approval. Moreover, there is less chatting and prolonged noise in the auditoriums. Dialogue must not be missed, and the film shadows do not pause as do flesh-and-blood actors. Appreciation of the funniest joke must be subdued quickly or the next witticism is lost for ever.
