POPULAR SINGER
MR. HEUGHAN AGAIN PLEASES The second of Air. William Heughan’s Auckland recitals attracted another appreciative audience at the Town Hall last evening. The programme was very appropriately chosen, not only providing pleasing variety but also serving to display the Scottish baritone’s nicely-rounded voice to good advantage. Apart from the fine quality and wide range of his voice, Air. Heughan possesses fine dramatic force and intensity. This he effectively demon-
strated in the great bass aria, “Se il Rigor” (Halevy), and also in the dramatic number from Aleyerbeer’s “Roberto il Diavolo,” which was sung with fine spirit. Scott’s “Young Loch invar,” “The Bells of Ys” (Nicholl) were also popular items. Schubert’s lovely "Death and the Alaiden,” with its
suggestion of dual voices, was very convincingly handled. “Dashing Away with a Smoothing Iron,” an old Somersetshire song of the type that Air. Heughan interprets so admirably, proved very interesting. Popular Scottish numbers included ‘Sound of the Pibroch,” “The Bonnie Earl o Alorav,” and "Wi* a Hundred Pipers.” Aliss Aland Bell, the talented ’cellist of the party, delighted the audience with several appropriate numbers, which included Kreisler’s “Liebesfreud,” Popper’s “Andaeht,” Ravel’s '..K 1 ? 06 on lorrae de Habanera,” and Scherzo’ (Van Goens), all of which were well received by an appreciative audience. Aliss Gladys Saver, in addition to demonstrating her artistry as accompanist, contributed two very pleasing solos in “Nocturne in E Flat” and ‘Vais© in E Atinor” (Chopin). The third concert will be given this evening.
