UNUSUAL STIPULATION IN ORPHANAGE BEQUEST
ESTABLISHMENT FOR WANGANUI (From Our Otcu Correspondent) WANGANUI, Today. The erection of the Margaret Waif Orphanage at Mosstown is now to be ] proceeded with, a bequest having! been made several years ago by an j old resident to perpetuate the j memory of his daughter, Margaret j Watt. The deed was dated February 2. 1880. and the orphanage is to be an \ asylum for orphans born within the j North Island. Trustees are to be the j Mayor, town ministers and elders of ! St. Paul's Presbyterian Chxjsrch in j Wanganui. Children will be retained at the ! establishment until they attain the j age of 15 years unless the trustees I think any may, before that age, be apprenticed or placed in some advantageous position. “No corporal punishment beyond j the use of a light cane shall be al- | lowed unless with direct sanction in I writing from the trustees, is a stipu- j lation in the bequest. TRIAL BY JURY One interesting regulation is that any boy or girl guilty of a breach of ] discipline or misconduct shall be tried by a jury of six of the eldest children of his or her own sex at the establishment, with the principal or eldest teacher for president, unless any of the six shall be in any way connected with the charge against the offender.
