NEW TRAINING COLLEGE PRINCIPAL APPOINTED MR. D. M. RAE CHOSEN Chosen from 17 applicants, Mr. D. M. Rae, vice-principal of the Auckland Training College, will succeed as principal Mr. H. G. Cousins, who retires on superannuation in August. The applications, which came from Britain, Australia and New Zealand, were considered by a special committee consisting of Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the Education Board, the senior inspector, Mr. C. W. Garrard, and Professor H. W. Seagar. The committee’s recommendation was approved by the Education Board, and has now been sanctioned by the Education Department. Mr. Rae’s teaching career began at the East Gore School, Southland, in 1906, and after some years he was appointed headmaster of the Riverton School. In 1924 he was appointed vice-principal of the Auckland Training College. In 1914 Mr. Rae obtained his B.A. at Otago University, but further study was interrupted by the war. at which he served for three years with the New Zealand forces. He was wounded at the battle of the Somme in 1916, and he was wounded again at Messines in the following year. During his time of service he commanded the Bth Southland Company, Ist Otago BattalOn returning to New Zealand he took his M.A. degree -with first class honours in history, and in 1927 he gained a diploma of education. He became a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 1923. With the welfare of the teachers at heart, Mr. Rae is a member of the Auckland Headmasters’ Association, and is on the management committee of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute. He has also worked hard to bring about the organisation of the New Zealand teachers’ summer school movement.
