Soccer Champions

LEADING TEAMS MEET

Can Ponies Beat Trams ? rIE meeting of the two teams at the top of the championship ladder should provide a stirring struggle at Blandford Park tomorrow, and Ponsonby will make a final effort to upset the Trams’ unbeaten record. The preliminary game between Celtic and Onehunga should be an even game. Thistle journey to Devonport to meet Shore, and Y.M.C.A. plays Belmont.

The championship series in tlie senior A grade is now nearing the conclusion, and Trams will need to lose the three remaining games to miss winning the championship; but Ponsonby has been sticking doggedly to the Trams’ trail until it suffered an unlucky second loss last Saturday. ironies are a bright team of young players, and by exploiting the bustling game tomorrow they hope to be the first to lower the transporters’ flag. It is sure to be a lively tussle between buoyant youth and the experienced veterans in green and black. The Trams’ supporters are confident of going through without striking their colours, and the game tomorrow should be the best of the championship bouts. Celtic and Onehunga, in the curtainraiser, are evenly matched, and both are anxious to move out of the danger zone of relegation at the foot of the ladder. On recent form the Manukau - siders will be favourites, but the Celts may fluke a come-back, and surprise their opponents. Shore will make a big attempt to move up at the expense of Thistle, and it Avail be no surprise if the Scots are held up by Shore’s strong defence, while Y.M. should have no difficulty in accounting for Belmont. JUNIOR NOTES

In tomorrow’s games Newmarket meets Rangers at Onehunga; North - cot© plays Corinthians at home; Tamaki meets Manurewa at St. Heliers; and Bon Accord plays Metro, at Cornwall Park School, Great South Road; Philomel having the bye. The positions in the race for promotion to full seniority are still open, and Navy has dropped three points in its last two games. A defeat by Newmarket and a draw with Corinthians indicate that the town teams are beginning to get the measure of the Calliope Pock ground, and the Philomel sharpshooters are not so deadly in their target practice as they were. Mutch is a sound performer in goal, and Miles the same stout defender in the “Phillie’s” backline, while Gilmore is the king-pin at centre-half in both attack and defence. In view of the game with the French cruiser which is promised, the Philomel men are getting into training as the Soccer laurels of the New Zealand Navy may be solely in their hands. Manurewa sprang a surprise on a weakened Bon Accord team last Saturday, when it put down a nap hand and netted five times. Lees, the auburn centre-half of ’Rewa, is a tiger for work both in defensive and offensive operations. and assisted the forwards by slamming in two good goals out of the five. As they are shaping at present the Manure wans look to have a first mortgage hold on the new Skerrett Memorial Cup, and appear like certainties for promotion. Rangers are showing a return to their start of the season form and have now moved up to third position. The eleven which journeyed to St. Heliers last Saturday was a weakened one, with Coyle and Kennedy “resting,” and Waterson was unlucky enough to injure himself in a minor crash on his journey to the Bay. The vacancy was filled after starting play by sending tin S.O.S. to the Domain for young Wolfenden, who showed up creditably against the sturdy Tamakis. Jack McKain donned the golden jersey again, but a kick on the knee sent him to the side-line early in the second spell. But, in spite of these mishaps, Rangers came home happy with a victorious smile, and are again chasing promotion. JUNIOR REP.
