The belief that in New Zealand at least £20,000,000 a year should be spent by tourists was expressed in the House of Representatives today by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon, P, A. de la Perrelle. Pie said that New Zealand could deliver the goods to tourists, and compared the Dominion’s gains from tourists with those of other countries Switzerland last year gained £ 66,000,000: Canada. £50.000,000; and New Zealand, £11,000,000. The Dominion should receive at leas; £20,000.000 in the future. The Minister in Charge of Publicity, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, and the Minister in Charge of Tourist Resorts, the Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward, knew their jobs, and could be relied upon to advertise New Zealand, and attract tourists. Mr. de la Perrelle regretted that reports of the earthquake were unfortunately magnified, and may have done harm to the Dominion’s reputation abroad. The Minister spoke of the beneficial effects of the tourist traffic in that it would bring settlers in its wake, people England coming here and getting tho idea of settling their children on the land.
