High Pitch Wins Well

KAITI CAPTURES SPRINT RACE Second Day at Trentham (Special to THE SUXJ WELLINGTON, Thursday. BEAUTIFUL weather today attracted a large crowd for an off day at Trentham, when the Wellington Racing Club's winter fixture was advanced another stage. While fairly good, the racing was by no means as interesting as on Wednesday. The going was again very soft. £-41,086 was put through the totalisator, against £39,642 10s for„the corresponding day last year, an increase of £1,443 10s.

Horomea Does Better

Horomea save a much improved display to win the Corunna Hurdles in convincing manner. Fine Acre £1,151 : was a hot favourite, with good support -also for Waltzer £5(51 and Horomea j £535. Inferno led up the straight from I Waltzer, Calluna, Horomea, Fine Acre i and Master Doon. Going out of the j straight Waltzer went to the lead, and | was well clear along the back from | Inferno. Calluna, Horomea and Fine ! Acre. Waltzer went away crossing the • lop, and was half a dozen lengths to j the good two furlongs from home. He j got over the last fence all right, but j tired, and Horomea ran him down, to j win by a length and a-half, with In- ! ferno half a dozen lengths back third. : Fine Acre failed to put any dash into | his work, being close up fourth, and i Calluna, Master Doon and General Wai j followed him. Horomea enjoyed a good passage all ; the way this time, and finally won j handsomely. Waltzer looked all over a winner at the second to last fence, but ho tired perceptibly. liis turn

will come, for he shows great promise as a hurdler. Inferno was always i prominent, although not quite good enough. Fine Acre was a big disap- | pointment and was under the whip i two furlongs from home. Probably I the hard race the first day* got to the I bottom of him. Master Doon was i never a possibility. Easy for Hopwood ! Hopwood proved to be the best of I good things for the Trial Plate, for j which he -was a well-backed third ■favourite with £BB2, Zarenc, £1,269, land Shortly, £1,034, also being in the market. The favourite got chopped out at the start, and prominent on to the course proper were Great Lady, Mahora, Loving Cup, and Zarene, with Hopwood lying handy on the rails. Once straightened up, Hopwood went to the front, and won very easily by two lengths, with Shortly a head in front of Great Lady. Loving Cup was fourth, and Zarene, Air Laddie, Le Champ, Money Mint, and Arrowzone next. Revelling in the going Ilopwood gave nothing else a look in. He is a greatly improved hack. Shortly finished strongly after being badly placed early. Great Lady is a good youngster, and only weakened right on the post. Loving Cup was a good fourth, failing as usual, to see it out. Zarene lost some lengths at the start, and was then hustled along, so had no finishing effort left. Air Laddie and Le Champ showed promise. Superb Riding Tells Reed's superb riding got Brilliant Light home by a narrow margin in the Seatoun Handicap. Most money was forthcoming for Maori Boy £1,163, Justify £827, and Brilliant Light £651, I with Balloon fifth choice. carrying | £458. [ A great start saw Justify hop out i smartest, but when they had settled ! down Glyn Dliu was in charge from |

•Justify, Brilliant Light. Lucre and Maori Boy. The last-named moved up fast crossing the top. and was just in front of Glvn Dhu at the turn for home, with Justify and Brilliant Light handy, and Balloon next on the rails. Maori Boy had the best of it until right up to the post, where Brilliant Light and Balloon came at him, and in a head and head finish Brilliant Light won from Balloon, with Maori Boy third. Three lengths away was Otaura Lass, and then came Glyn Dhu, Royal Opera, Justify, who weakened in the straight, and Hard Gold. : Brilliant Light registered a really ' good effort, for he was stopped at the distance and then had to come on the • outer. Reed was seen at his best on him. Balloon finished strongly, but Maori Boy should have been first or J second, for he was ridden anything hut i judiciously. This trio outclassed the | others, of whom Otaura Lass, Glyn i Dhu. Royal Opera. Justify and Hard Gold did best. Alaric Makes Amends | Royal Elm £734, Alaric £644, carried most of the money in the Hack ■ Steeplechase, and they paid the divi- ! 'lends. Askari made the early pace and at the fence at the half-mile Koauau fell and brought down San Fera and interfered with Aurora Borealis. Askari led over the stand double from Alaric, Boomerday, Airtight. Waitaunaha. Royal Elm and Bony ran along the back. Alaric ran up to Askari, and the former drew clear crossing the top, where Boomerday joined him. Royal Elm and Waitaunaha being handy At the home turn Alaric did the best from the last fence and won by five lengths from Royal Elm. with Boomerday two and a-half lengths away third. Askari was fourth and Waitaunaha and Airtight were the only others to finish. Aurora Borealis and Bonayran were pulled up. 1 Alaric bore out the opinion that he was unlucky on the first day. for this : time he placed the issue beyond all possible doubt. Royal Elm finished , well, ar.d Boomerday only got chopped out of second money over the last ■bit, hanging on much better. Askari

has now run two good races, and the third time may be better.

Goldfinch’s Fine Judgment

High Pitch, ridden a beautifully judged race, won the Parliamentary Handicap convincingly. Bisox, £1,783, was warm favourite, with Singleton, £055, second choice, and I-ligh Pitch, £559, fourth fancy. Ruanui led out of the straight from High Pitch, Town Bank, Singleton, Thurnbell, Tinokoa, the favourite being last. Ruanui led into the back stretch from Thurnbell, Town Bank, Singleton, Anolo, High Pitch, Fairy Herald, Tinokoa and Black Mint, with Bisox still last, but not too far away as to be out of it. Fairy Herald improved his position along the back, and, crossing the top where he was up with Ruanui as they came into the top stretch, was attended by Thurnbell, Town Bank. Singleton, Anolo, Bisox, Tinokoa and High Pitch. A good race ensued and High Pitch joined issue with Fairy Herald and Singleton, the former winning by nearly a length with a, neck separating Singleton and Fairy Herald. The fourth horse was Ruanui. and then came Thurnbell, Bisox, Town Bank, Black Mint, and Anolo, with Tinokoa last. Goldfinch rode a waiting race on High Pitch, and at the finish he carried too many guns for the opposition. He is a very fit horse now. Singleton ran another honest race, but was not quite good enough. Fairy Herald just failed to see it out, and the mile on Saturday should suit him, and also Ruanui, who has now gone two solid races. Thurnbell ran a surprisingly good race, hut Bisox was disappointing, and she is not yet at her best. Town Bank was always prominent, but stopped when the pressure was applied. Favourite Scores The favourite had an easy win in the High-weight. This was King’s Jest, £1,475, while the second horse, Aberfeldy was fourth choice with £649. Glena Bay and Grand National got all the worst of the start, Prince Lu being well clear going out of the straight from Curtsey, Aberfeldy, Glengariff. King’s Jest, Modern, Atereria and Beaumont, with Courageous and Glena Bay the last pair and well out it. Prince Lu still held a good five lengths lead down the back from AberfeldU Curtsey, King’s Jest, Modern, Atereria, Beaumont and Glengariff. The field closed up further on, and turing for home Prince Lu was closely attended by Curtsey, Tr°sham. King's Jest and Atereria, with Modern, Lady Gay and Glena Bay following. Once in line King’s jest drew out and won easily by three lengths from Aberfeldy. who was half a length in front of Curtsey. Then came Beaumont, Courageous, Lady Gay, Prince Lu, Modern, Atereria. . .King’s Jest outclassed the others, and it undoubtedly a smart one. Aberfeldy hung on well, and so to did Curtsey. Courageous endeavoured to concede too much start. Beaumont went a fair race. Public on the Job Kaiti, £1,621, Taboo, £1,360, and Marble King, £1,189, monopolised the betting in the Members’ Handicap, and they finished as backed. Marble King lost a lot of ground at the start. Quantum being the early leader from Royal Game, Kaiti, and Oration. On to the course proper Kaiti was clear of Quantum, Oration, Marble King, and Royal Game, and, coming on, Kaiti had little difficulty in winning easily by three lengths, with Taboo finishing fast, half a length in front of Marble King. Then came Takutama (who weakened over the last bit), Royal Game, and Oration. Kaiti spreadeagled his field this time, and showed encouraging form, suggestive of possibilities in the Winter Cup. Taboo is not as good as thought, for it was all he could do to get second. The unlucky horse of the race was Marble King, who had to concede the field a big start, and then ran wide on the bend. Takutama was a possibility for a place up the half distance. Mark Mint Again Mark Mint and Havering, caryring £1,148 and £1,457 respectively, were in most demand for the retone Handicap, and the former won easily. Lucky Bag put up a big break on the field in the early, part, being about eight lengths in front at the end. of the second furlong. On to the course proper Lucky Bag was in front, from Black Odin, Mark Mint, El Boa, Red Lane, and Bulolo. Mark Mint simply played with the field, and won as he liked. This made his third win on end. Havering beat the others just as easily. Results are as follow: Corunna Hurdles, of £270; 1J miles. 8 Horomea (It. Johnson), eh m, aged by Quarantine—Hermia, 10.2, R. Syme, 1* 2 Waltzer. 9.11, H.
