Pullen, who said that his 23 acres of land would cost too much to clear, was adjourned in order that defendant might make some arrangement. * * * Fewer Born in June A Gazette notice shows the total of live births registered for urban areas amounted to 958, as against 1,149 in May, a decrease of 191. Deaths in June were 567, a decrease of 28 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths, males contributed 319. and females 245. Forty-nine of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 8.64 per cent, of the whole number. Thirty-five of these were under one year of age.—P.A. It was only that their neglect led to a great deal of inconvenience Poor Steamer Service The Dunedin Chamber of Commerce has sent a letter to the Union Steamship Company protesting against the dislocation of the passenger service between the South Island and Melbourne occasioned by the withdrawal j of the Manuka for overhaul. The letter states that this creates a serious position as regards the southern | portion of the Dominion. It was I thought the compny would mke an effort to maintain the service, which is i already suffering from an irregular I and infrequent timetable, as the company is aware that efforts are being made to establish an improved service | between New Zealand, Melbourne and | Hobart, and while the temporary cancellation of the service at any time Is detrimental to the advancement of this portion of the Dominion, it is especially so at this time.
