FOR AMERICA CUP

LIPTON’S CHALLENGE NOW ACCEPTED FIVE RACES NEXT YEAR NEW YORK, Monday. The New York Yacht Club has accepted the challenge issued by the Royal Ulster Club on behalf of Sir Thomas Lipton for another contest for the America Cup. The races will be held off Newport, Rhodes Island. The result will be decided on the best three out of five events. The first race is to be sailed on September 13, 1930. The competing yachts are to be of 76ft rating. There will not be a time allowance. The New York Club's racing rules will govern the races. The America Cup was first offered as a trophy in 1851, by the Royal Yacht Squadron, and won by the yacht America in August, 1851, when she defeated the English yacht Aurora. Sir Thomas Lipton has challenged with four Shamrocks, in 1599, 1901, 1903 and 1920. The trophy has remained in America since 1851, in spite of several challenges by Lord Dunraven and others.
