“TOO MANY ’QUAKES”
WHY AUSTRALIANS SHUN NEW ZEALAND “WHY don’t you come to New Zealand?” Sir George Fowlds asked several Australians during his recent visit. “Oh, no; too many earthquakes; dreadful/’ they replied. Other passengers on the Marama yesterday said they had asked the same question but always received the same reply—“ Too many earthquakes.” Sir George Fowids went to great length to explain that New Zealand earthquakes were infrequent and very slight affairs. However, the Australians read their newspapers and a record of ’quakes and train smashes, with an occasional murder, is all they hear of this Dominion. And everyone is wondering what the Australians are saying today—after the news of Monday’s earthquake has been published.
