EPSOM ON SATURDAY

AUCKLAND TROTTING CARD PRELIMINARY CANTERS By ABAYDOS. The Auckland winter fixture, which opens on Saturday and concludes on Monday, promises, from every point of view, to be one of the most successful functions yet staged at Alexandra Park. The fields are large and the class engaged exceptionally good, while the handicapper has set backers many difficult problems. THE arrival of several competitors from the South has given the local track work a greater impetus for lightharness fans, and each day has seen a good attendance at Alexandra Park, where some interesting work has been accomplished. Others, anxious to have a run on the grass, have visited Otahuhu, where attractive fields have added further interest to the proceedings. The visitors are all in excellent fettle, the recent racing in the South having the effect of tuning them right up to concert pitch. On the other hand, local candidates have been less fortunate in this respect, while the bad weather experienced has also hampered them somewhat in their training operations. Despite this disadvantage, several Epsom and Otahuhu representatives will make things interesting for the visitors, and the clash between the pick of the South and North will be productive of high-class racing. Winter Handicap A good field of square-gaiters, a large number of whome appear also in the Provincial Trot, will parade for the opening item. After his tine showing at Hastings, the Gisborne threej ear-old TV ah, will be the elect of the tront liners, and he should also keep the back markers busy. Peterson and Direct Action are well placed on 24, and if the latter survives his winding up

ordeal he must have a chance. Akenehi is a real one, and if started here in

preference to the lighter class will be hard to dispose of others, all excepting Gold Star tii * Kolmar are engaged later bur .J’ 1 ' 1 ' two are capable of making the*2s®* interesting. Wall. As usual the draw f or will be a sound factor towards public selection, while good W:„ nnal j will be in demand. l„ thir^ ers Belle Axeworthy. Dawdler Gold^- tlon Great Ballin. Ethopian. Tns,!. Another item for the square-gaiter, many ot whom may have a run in >i first race. Akenehi looks like dong i better "V ,° ther ov . ent - buc Dipnoi is a solid customer olt the deep end Just behind is Floraline, a good son under winter conditions, and then l‘ ! yards further back is a useful trio in ’! Peter McKinnev | and Gold fcovereign will be liandv when i the box is In sight. while Western \oyage has recent winning form tn j recommend him. A likclv quartet will be Dipnoi. Floraline, Etta Cole and Anseline. Prince of Wales Handicap i Te " is just ? "ice-sized field to I provide a spectacular contest and create keen speculation. If The Abbev decides to leave correctly the others ■" ill have their work cut out to head him off in the rush lor the prize Dundas Boy has recent winning form ! on his side and must be one of the tough division. Vesuvius is coming right and promises to be in the picture while Torpedo Huon is a real dinkum stayer. Machine Gun and Padlock are due to turn up any time, while Cardinal Logan will have a host ot friends. The back-marker, Kohira cannot be counted out and if in his best form should be knocking at the business end. Dundas Boy, Torpedo Huon. Cardinal Logan and Kohara will be in demand. Hobson Handicap This two-mile contest is full of possibilities, and there is a fine class engaged, several of whom next season are sure to reach a high standard of efficiency. On the front is Great Delight, a real two-miler, and Reremai and Derby Lynn both promising sorts. ; Then Hal Chimes is a solid customer ! and if right will be a nuisance. War- * plane is an improving pacer and must nut be left out of calculations. Eveh n

Locanda. Mawhariti and Linkman are all in rare form, while Stoney has vet to prove his value in this country. Gold Dial is a genuine pacer, but four to command attention will be Derby Lynn, Hal Chimes, "Warplane and Linkman. Stewards’ Handicap The true gaiters will again parade, and although the field is small, the class is select. The front pair, Bingen Starr and Tradesman can tramp a solid two miles, but once they leave their feet lose a lot of ground. Rose Bingen looks to hold brighter prospects than Cannonball and Betty Moko, and Napland is in great order for the fight. Ngatira is always dangerous and if he reproduces his summer form will be difficult to dispose of. Native Star has been off the scene for some time, but Young Blake and Trampfast are handily placed, but the former may start for preference in the big pacers’ heat. Xapland, Ngatira, Young Blake and Trampfast will have many friends. Cornwall Handicap Speed is the chief feature with the field engaged for the mile dash, and off the front Harvest Child and Tony Victor hold fine prospects. All Bell, Daimeny and Nelson Tasker are a speedy

trio on the 12 yards mark, and Vesuvius may also prove equal to cutting out a merry mile. Cardinal Logan. Dundas Boy, Gold Jacket and Native Prince are speedy customers, but they may find the task of overhauling Harvest Child. Tony Victor, Dalmeny and All Bell beyond their prowess. Marconi Handicap Another good-sized field with high class represented. On the front line appears Rockaway, Carmel and Vendome, all recent winners, and they must play a prominent part in the argument. Great Peter is a brilliant pacer over this journey and the brother to Great Bingen and Co., will claim a lot of attention. Hal Chimes has. tons of speed if he begins right, and Brutus is creeping up to a mark where a reproduction of his best form would make it easy for him. Linkman is a consistent sort. Goldman is back to form and Gold Dial is a dangerous one, but on the same mark with this trio is that great three-year-old Wrackler, who is a real class horse. Form to be favoured are Vendome, Carmel, Great Peter and Wrackler.
