Zane Grey Upbraids

Dominion Sportsmen

INQUIRY IS WANTED MURDEROUS SWORDFISHING Press Association DUNEDIN, Today. “It is no sport to catch swordfish on big murderous triple hooks. The merest novice can do it.” In these words, in his latest hook on angling in New Zealand, Mr. Zane Grey casts a slur upon New Zealand sportsmen. At yesterday’s meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Rev. W. Saunders said that when hooked on a triple gang hook, a swordfish didn’t fight, but was drawn up, choking and bloody, with its stomach hanging out. If this was correct, it seemed, to the speaker, shocking cruelty. It was resolved to write to the Auckland society for an inquiry.
