BEEF SLIGHTLY EASIER WESTFIELD STOCK SALES WESTFIELD, 2.30 p.m. An aggregate yarding of approximately 780 head of fat cattle at Westfield today met with a slightly easier market. Best ox sold to 37s a hundred, best young cow and heifer, to 335. The quality of the ox beef yarding-, generally, was heavier than last week’s. Entries came from most parts of the province, but lines on account of Waikato vendors predominated, making - an aggregate steer yarding of approximately 380 head. There was a steady demand throughout, the bigger buyers taking their usual quota, and prices showed little change from late rates. Top price of the day was secured for a line of trucks of extra heavy prime big-framed steers on account of H. E. Reed, Waerenga, which made up 10 £l6 17s 6d, the top-priced pen going to Thos. Easter, Ponsonby Road. A line of 59 light to heavy prime steers on account H. Templeton. Rangiahua, made up to £l4 14s 6d. Five light to heavy prime steers on account J. B. Jordan, Kaukapakapa, made to £ls 15s. Twenty-four handy weight steers on account of J. H. Eyre, Tuakau, made to £l3 15s. Forty light to medium weight steers on acount Johnstone Bros., Kaiaua, made from £lO 7s Gd to £l3 15s. Fifteen well finished steers on account W. C. Ring, Hinuera, made up to £l6. Twenty-six well finished choice prime, but not big-framed young steers, on Recount Wagland Estate, Te Kuiti, made to £l4 17s 6d. An aggregate yarding of approximately 400 head of steers was made up of the usual mixed assortment. One truck of well finished cows on account of a Whakatane client made to £ll. A truck of choice prime young cows on account L. Chamberlain. Te Awamutu, made to £ll 7s 6d for a pen which went to R. and W. Mellaby, Ltd.
A short yarding of calves met with a very keen demand. The average quality was not high, there being a big percentage of medium finished and small calves. Runners made to £ 8 6s for a well-finished heifer on account of M. Whitelaw, Okaihau, bought by J. Rowe, Newmarket. Heavy prime vealers made to £5 19s. Small and fresh-dropped calves made from 7s. Two pens of well-finished mediumframed cows on account A. Robertson, Mangere. made from £9 to £lO. Slightly under # an average yarding of fat sheep did not contain quite the quality of last week. A start was not made on the sheep sales until after 2.30.
