STRANDED NEAR LYELL Press Association NKLSOX, Tuesday. >'ewman Brothers’ service car, with five passengers, which had not been reported since the earthquake occurred, was found today. It was discovered by searchers three miles on the West Coast side of Lyell. All the occupants are well. An airplane belonging to the Marlborough Aero Club was engaged by jfewman Brothers to search the district. Mr. J. Newman hoped in this way als° to P a tn information concerning the conditions of the roads. Captain Chandler was in charge of the airplane. buller breaks dams GREAT DANGER PAST Press Association WESTPORT, Today. A message from Reefton states that danger from the Buller River has been averted. The river broke through the darn today and is now elowly rising to its normal level. The dam was caused by large falls of earth at Fern Flat, which crashed into the river and impounded the water. Fears were entertained for the safety of Westport, as the river at fnangahua Junction had fallen 13ft. below its normal level SEVERITY OF SHOCK OFFICIAL CLASSIFICATION Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. The Government seismologist, Dr. C. E. Adams, at present classes the earthquake as nine on the Rossi-Forel scale, that is, at Westport and, perhaps, at Nelson, but more detailed reports, he says, may possibly Increase the figure to the maximum of ten. Up to this earthquake only seven deaths in New Zealand had heen recorded as definitely attributable to earthquakes. 110 SHOCKS RECORDED GEOLOGISTS INVESTIGATE Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. The observatory at Kelburn has been recording aftershocks continually. From 11.30 on Monday until 9 a.m. yesterday there were 110 'quakes, gradually diminishing in frequency. Preliminary geological investigations are being started by Messrs. Grange and Ferrar, of the Geological Survey Department, who left last night for that purpose. Expert opinion here is that the epicentre of the shake was close to Murchison.
