ARTISAN PLAYS BROKER

FINAL OF AMATEUR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP AMERICAN’S DEFEAT (Australian and 7s.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Heed. Noon. LONDON, Friday. There was a surprise in the fourth round of the amateur golf championship at Sandwich, when last year's winner, T. F. Perkins (Castle Bromwich) was defeated. Perkins was beaten at the last green, when his final putt just lipped the hole. According to the “Evening News,” Perkins seemed to be hurried, and did not play his usual game. The Prince of Wales appeared on the course unobtrusively, and accompanied Tolley’s match. The last eight players include C. J. Tolley, the Hon. Michael Scott and John Dawson (America). In the semi-finals Nelson Smith beat John Dawson at the 19tli; Tolley beat Hartley one up. . Thus the final of the amateur championship lies between Tolley, the former university champion, now a London stockbroker, and Smith, Scottish artisan, who is unknown in England. He is 36, a joiner by trade, living at Earl's Ferry. This is a dangerous combination, for there' was one, another joiner hailing from Earl’s Ferry who was quite a good golfer. His name was James Braid.
